Absolute Foods
For a New Zealand company to flourish in the exacting Chinese market there is a simple formula, according to the Managing Director of Absolute Foods Ltd, Ian Langridge.
“We must have our people actually in the market place,” he said. “As premium seafood exporters it is essential that we develop direct and strong working relationships with not only our import partners but also the chefs and restaurant-hotel managers.
“With our distance from the market it could have been easy to fill the roll of order-taker and shipper. But ‘easy’ is not the right solution. Our people are in the market place regularly throughout the year to enhance our market knowledge and relationships .”
Mr Langridge was commenting on his company’s entry in the Cathay Pacific Trade Awards.
He recalled that while hosting a New Zealand visit by senior management from the Shangri-la hotel group in 2007 Absolute became aware of the growing recognition and demand their group had for verifiable food safety – traceability.
Absolute is an owner and partner in Jemco Ltd, New Zealand’s leading vertically integrated oyster grower, processor and exporter representing up to 70 per cent of the country’s production. Mr Langridge said that since Jemco’s establishment in 1998 to develop the Japanese market it has become their largest supplier in the world for oysters for raw consumption. There are now active Jemco markets from North America to Europe.
Jemco pacific oysters are but one of the premium species now being supplied to the Chinese market by Absolute.
Absolute is confident of achieving similar success in the Chinese market by building on the excellent relationships established to date.

Zespri
Zespri‘s huge success and economic impact is hinged on its expertise on moving kiwifruit from the grower in rural New Zealand to the customer overseas.
This expertise produces revenue of aound one billion dollars and annual sales of around 100 million trays. It plans to source one third of its fruit from offshore to counteract seasonality and reinforce its market share.
Sales to China commenced in 1993 and by 2007 had reached 5 million trays.
Zespri has faced the challenges of inconsistent infrastructure, investing with supply chain partners to overcome the obstacles of presenting fruit throughout the market in good condition. Putting a strong emphasis on market research, a series of projects with distribution partners translates consumer insights into improved practices through the supply chain back to the orchards themselves.
The underpinning principles of the Zespri system include total integration and documented traceability from grower to consumer. Amongst its key strategies, Zespri plans to source and sell Chinese fruit under the Zespri brand and to pack one million trays in China by next year. It targets to sell 15% of its crop in China by 2020.
